What is the Cabbage Soup Diet

Basically it is a very low calorie diet, low in fat and high in fiber and helps you lose weight fast before embarking on a more moderate long term diet. This soup diet is a seven day diet plan.

The Cabbage Soup Diet was once rumored to have originated by a hospital, but no data is available in support of this. No person or organization has claimed responsibility for inventing this soup diet. Therefore, there isn’t an official version, but various cabbage diet plans based around eating large quantities of cabbage soup, and very little else. Individuals should look to bodybuilding supplements to enhance this diet, to be sure that you are amply nourished.

Does it Work

This soup diet has been around for a while now, promising the dieters a loss of 10-l5 pounds in just one week. Some versions of the diet even promise higher weight loss amounts, some too ridiculous to mention. Let’s just say that it temporarily works—it is a tool that can be used to jump-start your diet. The soup is quite tasty, it is low in calories, and contains some vitamins that you need when dieting. Because of the fiber intake, it also acts as a great filler.

What Does the Diet Entail

This seven day plan is very strict. The premise behind it is to eat as much soup as you like every day – enough to fill you up, so that you will not be looking to eat much else. However, on specific days, other foods may be added to the soup diet. No alcohol is allowed and drinks are limited to water, and unsweetened fruit juices.

>Day 1 – Eat all the fruit that you desire, except bananas. Drink unsweetened tea, black coffee, cranberry juice or water. Enjoy as much of the cabbage soup as you like. Eat only cabbage soup and the fruit for the first day of this diet.

>Day 2 – Eat all the fresh, raw and cooked veggies that you desire. However do not eat

dried beans, peas or corn. For dinner eat a large baked potato with butter. Try to include green leafy veggies in the mix. Again, eat as much cabbage soup as you like.

>Day 3 – Combine day one and day two of this soup diet by eating fruit and veggies (no bananas, dried beans, peas, corn or baked potato). Eat as much cabbage soup as you like.

>Day 4 – Eat up to eight bananas and drink as much skim milk as you like on this diet, as well as cabbage soup. On this day, your desire for sweets should be lessened. You are now more than half-way through the diet.

>Day 5 – Enjoy up to 20 ounces of baked, grilled or broiled beef and up to six fresh tomatoes. Drink at least six to eight glasses of water and have at least one serving of the cabbage soup. You may substitute broiled or baked chicken without the skin, for the beef. Fish may also be substituted.

>Day 6 – Eat all the beef and veggies you desire, except potatoes. Eat at least one serving of cabbage soup.

>Day 7 – Eat up to two cups of brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices and all the veggies you want. Eat until you are full. Eat the cabbage soup at least once. No diet soda on this day.

Recipe for Cabbage Soup

1 package of Lipton soup mix

2 bouillon cubes for flavoring – either chicken or beef flavored

1 stick of celery (not the whole stalk) – diced

½ head of green cabbage – diced

3 carrots – sliced

2 bell peppers – any color – sliced

6 large green onions, or l large yellow, white or purple onion – diced

2 cans of tomatoes – either diced or whole

Is the Cabbage Soup Diet Healthy

The ingredients that go into making the cabbage soup are mostly healthy – though it may contain too much sodium if the soup mix and bouillon cubes are both used. Overall, it is deficient in protein, carbohydrates and essential fats. However, if the diet is only followed for 7 days, as indicated, this shouldn’t cause individuals in good health any long-term problems. On the other hand, individuals who have special dietary needs, including diabetics, should definitely consult a doctor before starting the cabbage soup diet. It would be a good idea for all dieters, that before they start any diet, to consult with their physician before doing so.

Nonetheless, it is always recommend that a balanced, healthy diet combined with exercise is the most beneficial, most effective, and safest long-term way to lose weight.
