Bodybuilding is the process by which muscle fibers are developed through a combination of weight training, increased caloric intake, and rest. Individuals who engage in this activity are referred to as bodybuilders. Competitive bodybuilding is a sport whereby bodybuilders display their physiques to a panel of judges, who then assign points based on their aesthetic appearance.

However, forty years ago bodybuilding was still a kind of subculture that sprung from Muscle Beach. While they cared about being big, their main focus was their strength and being able to perform physical stunts. The stunts they performed were as important to them as their appearance. These stunts would last all day in the hot sun. Guys doing handstands on one another, human pyramids, one-arm lifts, as well as jumps, tosses and tumbling all seem to win the day and entertain our post-war forefathers. They seemed more like circus performers than bodybuilders.

 

Most of the builds back then were very top heavy, since few did much of leg training, because they did not have the equipment we have today. Big hammy biceps and a meaty chest were in. They were considered fat by today’s standards.

The training sentiment at that time was the more you put into weight training, the more you got out of it. Guys would spend hours in the gym doing set after set. Most of the oldest routines reflected a combination of maximal weightlifting tricks and physical stunts, with little or no focus on wanting to work and shape the muscle. This was the trend until guys like Steve Reeves entered the picture. While he did some tricks and stunts in his earlier days, his main focus was on the aesthetics of his physique. Eventually, bodybuilding emerged from the dark corners and we got the hang of it. Visionaries like Joe Weide, Vince Gironda Dan Lluire and Bert Goodrick shaped the early principles

Creatine increases muscle mass, protein synthesis and some types of exercise capacity after it has been taken for a month. Typically bodybuilders and athletes take high doses (20 grams per day) during a five-day loading phase and about five grams per day during a maintenance phase. Taking creatine with carbohydrates and amino acids may be more beneficial, because it seems to speed uptake.

These bodybuilding supplements work by increasing creatine phosphate—an important high-energy compound in the cells. However, many bodybuilders and athletes are not meticulous about taking supplements and often try to improve performance by taking low doses of creatine for a short time. Research found that six days of low-dose creatine supplementation (six grams per day of Actijube) did not increase exercise capacity, muscle mass, or strength.

Creatine is a safe and effective supplement taken correctly. It improves performance in repeated sprint cycling, strength training and treadmill running. It also improves power output on a stationary bike by 20 percent. Most individuals take this supplement as a training and recovery aid. You do not have to take a lot of it, but you need to take it long enough to increase levels of creatine phosphate in the muscles.

Female Fitness came about as a result of the promoters looking for something that would show female bodybuilders in a different light. The idea behind this was to include females who were athletic, fit and attractive, but who did not possess the muscular development of a female bodybuilder.
